DJ Shadow and his band of beatsmiths from the Bay Area and beyond, Liquid Amber, are approaching their one-year anniversary in August. But first, the label celebrates its fifth release–Mophono’s M.O.3. EP–including FLOTSAM, premiering today exclusively on LessThan3.
FLOTSAM is a dark, enigmatic beats item steeped in Liquid Amber’s signature experimentation. Fuzzy blips and quaggy pops make up the surface layers that bubble from Mophono’s bed of 808s, and the downright haunting vocal serves as the final sonic surprise to complete the impressive production.
A Bay Area local, Mophono–aka DJ Centipede–honed his skills over 20 years of playing parties and even starting some of his own, including San Francisco’s once-popular LOOSE JOINTS! weekly alongside DJs Tom Thump. He has since turned more of his attention to his DJ sets and productions, for which he crafts many of his own pieces of gear himself.
